Victoria Times Colonist Masthead Market Edge
Market Edge

Market Edge
At the centre, but on the edge. That’s Victoria. It’s an intimate city that is also British Columbia’s provincial capital. And let’s get this straight: Victoria is on Vancouver Island – a land mass about the size of the Netherlands – but it’s nowhere near the city of Vancouver. Our town is a 90-minute ferry ride from the mainland, just far enough away for Victorians to evolve their own lifestyles and attitudes. 2007 Retail Sales: $3.9 billion / Population: 336,300
Victoria attracts residents from all over to bask in Canada's mildest climate. Here is some insight into our market:

One Lifestyle
Contemporary Victoria has a distinctly west coast edge. People like the quality of life – tai chi in the park, hiking Vancouver Island rainforest trails, and golfing and sailing every day of the year. The city is home to:
  • The most Olympic athletes per capita in the nation (more than 50 Victoria-based athletes went to the Athens games).
  • Canada’s busiest municipal golf course (open year-round).

Two Jobs
Prosperous and educated, our residents work in the tourism and tech sectors and a very busy film industry, and for major employers such as the military, the B.C. provincial government, the Vancouver Island Health Authority and the University of Victoria.

Three Tourism
Victoria tourism revenue grew for the 3rd straight year, reaching $1.2 billion in 2006 from more than 3.5 million overnight visitors. Cruise ship arrivals totaled 184 for the year, smashing the previous record set in 2004 by nearly 30%.

Four Advanced Technology
Vancouver Island has a flourishing advanced-technology sector. There are more than 1,000 advanced technology companies and over 15,000 employed professionals generating over $1 billion in revenues. Emerging sectors include life sciences, engineering technology, electronics, energy technology, software development and advanced manufacturing.
