CH creates a "new sensation" this summer with Mark Burnett series Rock Star: INXS

(TORONTO - Wednesday, May 25, 2005) Rock on with CH this summer as the new Mark Burnett reality series Rock Star: INXS takes the stage in search of a new lead singer for the Australian rock band INXS. Four Canadians among a total of 14 contestants will get the chance to hypnotize audiences with their musical talents. The 13-week series will premiere Monday, July 11 at 9pm, and will air three times a week on CH Hamilton and CH Vancouver Island.

Rock Star: INXS will combine the world of rock music and unscripted drama and focus on the contestants' live stage performances as well as their behind-the-scenes relationships. Alternative rock guitarist Dave Navarro will team up with model and actress Brooke Burke to host the show.

"We are very excited about this new acquisition which builds on our strong relationship with Mark Burnett," said Adam Ivers, Vice-President, Programming, CanWest MediaWorks. "Rock Star: INXS will appeal to a large audience, especially given that our viewers can root for their favourite Canadian contenders."

Each week, with input from viewers, judges and INXS band members, there will be one contestant eliminated. The winner will become the new lead singer for INXS, and join the band on a world concert tour and work with the group on a new album.

Auditions were held earlier this year in Toronto, in cities throughout the U.S., as well as Sydney, London and Tokyo and were open to both men and women at least 21 years old. Contestants got the chance to perform three songs in the audition and were allowed to play a musical instrument or to have an accompanist.

With a career spanning 25 years, INXS is unquestionably one of the world's greatest bands. They have sold more than 30 million records worldwide, and garnered numerous awards. Lead singer Michael Hutchence died in 1997. Following a two-year hiatus, the band returned to the concert stage to officially open Sydney's Olympic Stadium. By 2002, INXS had returned to the international concert arena and guest vocalists included Terence Trent D'Arby and Jon Stevens. Rock Star: INXS premieres with a one-hour episode on Monday, July 11 at 9pm, followed by a one-hour show on Tuesday at 10pm and a half-hour show on Wednesday at 9:30pm. Beginning Monday, July 18 Rock Star: INXS will air three times a week as follows:
Mondays at 9:30pm - half-hour home-life episode
Tuesdays at 10pm - one-hour performance episode
Wednesdays at 9:30pm - half-hour results show
