CH Tsunami Relief Drive

(Hamilton - Monday, January 10, 2005) -- In response to the devastation in the countries surrounding the Indian Ocean, CH Television will devote one full day's news programming on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 beginning at 6 am to raise money for tsunami relief efforts.
The CH Tsunami Relief Drive will begin with CH Morning Live co-hosts Bob Cowan and Annette Hamm. CH Morning Live will continue to provide vital news, weather and traffic information each half hour while the rest of the program will be devoted to raising money for tsunami relief efforts. In addition, CH will also dedicate CH News at Noon with Connie Smith and Matt Hayes; CH Live @ 12:30 with Mark Hebscher and Donna Skelly; CH Talk Live at 1 pm with Bill Kelly; BEAT Line at 4 pm with Adele Newton and CH News at Six with Dan McLean to the tsunami relief efforts. The drive will peak with a special edition of CH News at Eleven with Nick Dixon. The entire CH News team including Dan McLean, Connie Smith, Donna Skelly, Bill Kelly, Ken Welch, Steve Ruddick and Maria Hayes will be on hand for the final push.
CH News correspondents will be live at the Red Cross Centre in Hamilton, at Hamilton City Hall, as well as at news bureaus in Halton, Niagara, and Queen's Park. Niagara Falls Mayor Ted Salci, Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale, Burlington Mayor Rob MacIsaac and Hamilton Mayor Larry Di Ianni will be making special appearances throughout the day offering their support and encouraging each community to take part in this day-long drive for tsunami relief contributions. Premier Dalton McGuinty has also been invited to join the drive on CH Live @ 12:30.
Representatives from local school boards and police departments will support the CH Tsunami Relief Drive by making financial contributions on January 11. In addition, various local businesses, entertainers, political representatives, sports and community groups will also be on hand to assist with the fundraising efforts.
"Tuesday, January 11 is the last day the federal government will match donations. CH has partnered with the Red Cross to conduct this one-day relief drive to help maximize the contributions of this generous community," said CH General Manager Patrick O'Hara. "Our communities and our staff have offered many great ideas and suggestions in an outpouring of concern and a deep desire to help."
Staff and volunteers from the Hamilton Chapter of the Canadian Red Cross and McMaster University will be operating the call centre phone banks, which have been generously donated by McMaster University.
"The Red Cross relies on public and corporate donations to provide assistance during and following a disaster," said Diana Borowski, fund development director for the Canadian Red Cross in Ontario. "The outpouring of generosity and compassion being shown by individuals and organizations like CH Television is extraordinary. This money will help Red Cross provide relief items such as clean drinking water, shelter and medicine to those who so desperately need it, as well as support long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction."
