Ladies, start your engines, as documentary series Girl Racers premieres July 8 and 9 on Global

(TORONTO - Tuesday, June 21, 2005) The new four-part documentary series Girl Racers is a story of hopes and dreams, heartbreak and victory, and eight women who were born for speed. The high-octane documentary, which premieres Friday, July 8 and Saturday, July 9 on the Global Television Network, charts the course of North America's top female racecar drivers throughout the 2004 auto-racing season in one of the few sports in which women compete directly with men.

Narrated by former driver and racing enthusiast Jason Priestley, viewers will go behind-the-scenes with each racer, sharing the thrill of being in the pits, the excitement of the podium, as well as the disappointment of accidents and car problems, and the long hours of sponsor engagements and public appearances.

Two drivers who are competing at the highest level are:

Danica Patrick: The Ohio native stunned the racing world by placing second in a major European Championship when she was only 18. With the backing of legendary INDY 500 winner Bobby Rahal and talk-show host David Letterman, she returned to the U.S. taking the racing world by storm. On May 29, 2005, Danica, at age 23, became the fourth woman ever to compete in the prestigious INDY 500, and the first woman in history to lead the race, holding it for 19 laps and ultimately finishing fourth.

Milka Duno: A naval engineer by training who holds four masters' degrees, Milka started racing sports cars just six years ago in her native Venezuela and quickly attracted high-level sponsorship. She is the first woman to win (twice) at Homestead Miami and at the Petit le Mans in Braselton, Georgia. She is also featured in the largest-ever Hispanic marketing campaign for Pontiac.

Hot on their heels are six Canadian stars-in-the-making:

Annette Blenkarn (Aldergrove, B.C.), Valerie Limoges (Longueuil, Que.), and Ashley Taws (Toronto, Ont.): Open-wheel racers who struggle to get and hold the sponsorship that keeps them in the driver's seat, one battling a near-fatal car crash that may be a career-ender.

Melanie Paterson (Hillsburgh, Ont.): One of the best and smartest endurance sports car racer in the business and a self-proclaimed adrenalin junkie whose dreams are shattered in a race alongside Milka at the Petit le Mans.

Ashley Ziarko (Edmonton, Alta.) and Natasha Cherchuk (Edmonton, Alta.): Drag racers who are so addicted to the thrill of speed that they log days and weeks of preparation for seconds of euphoria.

Girl Racers is produced by Vancouver-based Screen Siren Productions. The documentary is produced by Stephanie Symns, executive produced by Trish Dolman, and directed by Barry Gray. For more information, go to www.girl-racers.com.
