(TORONTO - Monday, June 13, 2005) Global National with Kevin Newman dominated the network section of the awards competition presented by Canada's Radio-Television News Directors Association. The awards were handed out Friday night in Toronto. Earning nominations in five of the eight categories, the program has won three, including the prestigious Bert Cannings award for Best Newscast.
"To be named Canada's Best National Newscast by the leaders of Canada's broadcast newsrooms is an important benchmark for our team," said Global National Anchor and Executive Editor Kevin Newman. "We are competitors by definition, but to have the respect of our peers is tremendously gratifying. Especially for such a young, national organization."
"This is a great night not only for Global National, but for the entire Global News network across the country," said Executive Producer Kenton Boston. "It is nice to be recognized by the industry as our audience grows. We have a strong group of journalists who work very hard every day to tell a different side of the story sooner under the expert direction of Kevin Newman."
Global National also received the Charlie Edwards Award, presented for Best Spot or Breaking News. It was based on Global National's coverage of the day that the sponsorship scandal first broke. On that day, fast work made for complete reports that were produced in the narrow timeframe between the Auditor-General's afternoon lock-up and the newscast's early evening deadline.
Global National also received its first award in the In-depth/Investigative category for the hour-long special Know Your Enemy: al Qaeda's Third Wave. Newman hosted the program from Washington and New York City with reports from Bosnia and the U.K.
Global National with Kevin Newman airs seven nights a week as follows:
Ontario/Quebec/Alberta - 6:30pm
Manitoba/Saskatchewan - 6pm
British Columbia - 5:30pm
Maritimes - 11:15pm weekdays; weekends at 11pm
