Global Television documentary Road to Bollywood looks at lure of fame and fortune for Indo-Canadians

(TORONTO - Thursday, May 12, 2005) Road to Bollywood is a new documentary that follows Indo-Canadians as they return to their native India to find fame in the country's bustling movie and television industry. The documentary airs Friday, May 27 on the Global Television Network and Sunday, June 26 on PRIME.

Each year, India's movie capital pumps out 800 movies for the masses. With a mix of boy-meets-girl storylines, exotic dance numbers, comedy, fantasy and family values, Bollywood films have garnered a huge following in North America, England, China, Africa, the Middle East and even China.

In a country of one billion, Bollywood provides a respite from daily life and at one time was a nostalgic link to the past for older Indians abroad. Today, Bollywood has been inundated with Indo-Canadians who want to be stars. Raised on Hindi films and comfortable with western pop culture, these Canadians have shunned the stereotypical roles that Hollywood offers and instead have headed to the city of Bombay. Many soon realize that hard work, endless auditions and their Canadian roots don't guarantee success as they compete with thousands for small roles.

Road to Bollywood is told through the experiences of three Vancouverites who have left Canada hoping to become stars in Bollywood. As well, the production profiles three Toronto sisters who spend their evenings and weekends honing their acting and dancing skills. Once they finish school, all three hope to head to India. Road to Bollywood follows the sisters as they prepare for a big Bollywood concert.

Road to Bollywood is produced, written and narrated by Global National correspondent Jas Johal. Paul Rowand is co-producer and director of photography.

Road to Bollywood airs Friday, May 27 on the Global Television Network as follows:

Ontario/Quebec/Alberta/British Columbia - 8pm
Manitoba/Saskatchewan- 7pm
Maritimes - 9pm
