Global Television documentary Jenin: Massacring Truth wins top doc prize at Houston film festival

(TORONTO - Tuesday, May 10, 2005) The Global Television documentary Jenin: Massacring Truth has won the top documentary prize at the 38th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Independent Film Festival, which ran April 22 to May 1. Produced and directed by Canadian journalist Martin Himel, the documentary won the Special Grand Jury Gold Prize. Jenin: Massacring Truth examines how the British and European media misreported events in the Middle East and their response when the true facts became known.

"It is a significant acknowledgement of a Canadian documentary and an honour for Global Television."
Jenin: Massacring Truth documents events surrounding a suicide bombing campaign by Palestinian terrorists against Israeli cities. Israel responded by invading the West Bank cities to root out the terrorists suspected of hiding there. The Euro-British media, with reports that reached hundreds of millions of people around the world, declared Israel was committing massacres and atrocities in Jenin. Months later, commissions from the United Nations and Human Rights Watch cleared Israel of that charge. But for Israeli soldier Jonathan Van Caspel, who fought in Jenin, the stain of being falsely branded a war criminal remained.
Filmed in Israel, the West Bank, Jenin, London, Johannesburg, Washington, Boston and Toronto, Jenin: Massacring Truth goes into Jenin and the war with footage rarely seen in the outside world. It also gives Jonathan a rare chance to meet some of the journalists who falsely branded Israel's actions as war crimes.
