(TORONTO - Wednesday, May 4, 2005) The Final Word: The Road to CanSpell is a compelling new documentary that follows the emotional rollercoaster of regional winners and runners-up in CanSpell, Canada's inaugural national spelling competition launched by CanWest MediaWorks in February 2005. The one-hour documentary will air Friday, May 20 on the Global Television Network.
"We are delighted to offer our viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the fascinating journey of a group of talented and dedicated students," said Barbara Williams, Senior Vice President, Programming and Production. "You will see their parents, friends, teachers and the judges literally hang on their every word."
Over three months, more than 80,000 spellers in Grades 5 to 8 from 11 different regions across Canada participated in school, district and regional competitions to determine the first champion. The first and second place finishers in each region qualified to compete in the finals which were held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on April 16. On May 29, each of the regional winners will go to Washington D.C. to represent Canada at the 78th annual edition of the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The Final Word: The Road to CanSpell is produced by MidCanada Entertainment, and is produced by Kevin Dunn, and written and directed by Doug Howe. The documentary will air first on Global, with subsequent airings on CH and PRIME, as follows:
