National Post Appoints Industry Veterans to Five Key Senior Positions

TORONTO – Monday, February 20, 2005 – Douglas Kelly, Editor-in-Chief of the National Post today announced the following senior appointments as the paper continues to build on its strengths.

Stephen Meurice - Deputy Editor
A Montreal native, Mr. Meurice began his journalism career as a reporter at the Sherbrooke Record. He then worked at the Ottawa Citizen as a copy editor, eventually becoming night news editor. Mr. Meurice joined the Post at its launch in 1998 and was the paper's first front page editor. He then went on to be night editor, Deputy Managing Editor and Managing Editor, News.

Jonathan Harris – Director of Online
Jonathon adds this position to his current duties as Executive Editor. A Toronto native, Mr. Harris began his journalism career at Maclean's magazine before joining Canadian Business magazine. He joined the National Post in 2000 and held several editing positions on the Financial Post's news desk before being appointed Executive Editor.

Gayle Grin - Managing Editor, Design & Graphics
Gayle will also work with the entire CanWest chain on design issues. Ms. Grin was Feature Design Director at the Montreal Gazette where she won a National Newspaper Award in the design category. She joined the National Post as part of the design group that launched the national newspaper and has since headed that team. She has won more than 170 design awards, including gold, silver and judges special recognition for her work at the National Post and the Gazette. In the most recent international Society of News Design competition, the National Post was one of the top 10 winning newspapers in all categories, winning 22 awards. The Post is recognized and respected for its innovative design. Twice, the National Post was named one of the world's best-designed newspapers by SND.

Ian Karleff - Deputy Managing Editor of the Financial Post.
Mr. Karleff, a former business reporter at Reuters news agency and the Financial Post, was Associate Editor of FP.

Deborah Stokes FP Weekend Editor.
Ms Stokes, who is a former travel editor at the Post, has been working with Sarah Murdoch, Managing Editor, Features to revamp FP Weekend.

“These new appointees have a wealth of experience in the newspaper business,” said Mr. Kelly. “They have distinguished themselves as leaders in the industry and I’m confident their new roles will enhance the strength of the paper.”
