(TORONTO - Thursday, February 3, 2005) The Global Television Network, in association with Shaftesbury Films Inc., is pleased to announce that Season I of ReGenesis will premiere on Global Television in the fall of 2005. The 13-part one-hour, science investigation drama series, tackles provocative issues including stem-cell research, mad-cow disease, and bioweaponry throughout the continuing drama series.
Global viewers will experience the opportunity of watching the controversial new drama series unedited when it airs this fall. This is a first in Canadian broadcasting where a series produced by Canadians for The Movie Network and Movie Central, (Canada's premier pay services), will be broadcast on conventional television following its release on pay television.
"The acquisition of ReGenesis creates a new model for CanWest and the Canadian production community to ensure that outstanding Canadian content reaches the largest possible audience," said Kathleen Dore, President, Television and Radio, CanWest MediaWorks.
"We are delighted to be working with Shaftesbury Films in bringing this high-quality series to Global," said Adam Ivers, Vice President of Programming. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with Shaftesbury, who recently produced the Global pilot The Jane Show."
"We are proud that Canada's pay-television networks took the leap of faith to help create and realize ReGenesis. Global's acquisition of ReGenesis is proof positive that The Movie Network's and Movie Central's commitment is paying off," said Christina Jennings, Shaftesbury's chairman and series creator. "Global's on-going partnership will help put the series in front of audiences from coast to coast. We're thrilled to be working with leaders in the Canadian television industry."
"The Movie Network is committed to producing high-quality Canadian drama and we are very proud of the success this home-grown made-for-pay-television series is enjoying," said Michelle Marion, Director, Canadian Independent Production, Astral Television Networks. "We are delighted with Global's decision to acquire ReGenesis so that more and more Canadians get introduced to clever, edgy and sophisticated Canadian series."
"Global's acquisition of ReGenesis is great news for Canadian television," said Shelley Gillen, Head of Creative Affairs for Movie Central. "Their decision to also broadcast this series unedited, clearly supports pay television's belief that Canadian viewers want their own unique and provocative programming. Movie Central looks forward to working with producers and other partners to continue to create and offer exceptional original programming for Canadians."
ReGenesis focuses on the North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission (NorBAC), an organization formed to investigate questionable advances in biotechnology. Toronto native Peter Outerbridge stars as David Sandstrom, a molecular biologist who leads a team of researchers as they seek the truth to the ethical, legal and moral consequences of scientific progress. Throughout the series, Sandstrom is constantly challenged to question the impact science has on people's lives; often he discovers the answers are not what anyone expects to hear.
The series co-stars: Maxim Roy and Conrad Pla of Montreal, Halifax native Ellen Page, Greg Bryk and Dmitry Chepovetsky of Winnipeg, Sarah Strange and Mayko Nguyen of Vancouver and Mishu Vellani and Mark Rendall from Toronto. Directing duties for ReGenesis are shared by three of Canada's most celebrated film and television directors, Genie and Gemini-nominee John L'Ecuyer (Queer as Folk, Curtis's Charm), Gemini Award-winner Don McBrearty (The Interrogation of Michael Crowe, Butterbox Babies), and Gemini Award-winner Jerry Ciccoritti (Lives of the Saints, Trudeau). Dr. Aled Edwards, Professor and Banbury Chair of Medical Research and Chief Executive, Structure Genomics Consortium, serves as the Science Consultant.
ReGenesis is produced by Shaftesbury Films for Astral Media's The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central, with the participation of Corus Entertainment Inc., The Movie Network, the Canadian Television Fund - License Fee Program, Rogers Cable Network Fund, the Independent Production Fund, and the Government of Ontario - The Ontario Film & Television Tax Credit. ReGenesis is distributed by The Shaftesbury Sales Company and Oasis International.
