TORONTO, ON February 22, 2006 Dose has called an election for the 78th Annual Academy Awards. This year the daily magazine is hitting the political stage with their Oscar coverage and creating an election campaign around five key award categories, including; best actor, best actress, best director, best documentary and best picture. Each day, Dose take an irreverent look at the nominated movies, directors and actors as if they were each candidates running for office with a daily feature containing; suggested campaign slogans, songs and hot-button issues.
Readers will also have the opportunity to have their vote heard at dose.ca/Oscars, with the results being published in Dose. A limited number of exclusive Voice Your Oscars Choice pins will be distributed so people can (literally) wear their vote on their sleeve.
Every media outlet is gearing up for the Oscars with the usual summaries and voting options, but we decided to get away from the typical approach to Oscar coverage, said Dan Sorotschynski, Director of Marketing for Dose. Many of the top films on this years list carry a corresponding political issue so it was the perfect opportunity to get people talking in a different way about this years awards and led us to develop the 78th Annual Oscar election campaign.
The campaign begins on Monday February 27th with a new feature article each day in Dose dedicated to a different category leading to the Friday, March 3rd issue, which will be Doses Weekend Guide to the Oscars.
To get readers rallying behind their favourite Oscar picks, 7 different exclusive pins featuring catchy campaign slogans were designed to spotlight award nominees and drive readers to vote online. Dose reporters will be distributing the pins in each of the Dose cities Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
The film studios campaign hard for their movies with the Academy voters, so Dose decided to create its own campaign for the average moviegoer, complete with campaign materials these highly coveted pins, said Celine Wong, Culture Editor for Dose. What many people dont realize is that the Oscars are a very political event and we wanted to play into that. We decided to create an editorial package that would stand out and also interact with our readers by giving them a way to stand behind their favourites and voice their choices.
The Academy Awards are Sunday March 5, 2006. Dose magazine and dose.ca will print the results of the campaign on Monday March 6, 2006. The magazine will also include peoples views on the outcome and thoughts on the entire campaign.
