A poll by working.com outlines the top priorities for students looking for Summer work |
 |
(TORONTO) Money is the top consideration for todays students as they begin the process of a summer job search according to a poll by working.com. The site questioned student job seekers from across Canada about what they consider when looking for summer employment. According to the poll 53% ranked wages as the most important followed by experience (28%), fun (12%) and finally location (6%). Additionally, an increasing number of students also feel they have to work during the school year, in addition to a summer job, in order to pay back their student debt.
The data is not surprising, said Kim Peters, General Manager, working.com. Todays students feel they need to place top priority on how much money they can earn in order to keep up with the costs of tuition and living. However, employers should keep in mind that it doesnt take away from the fact that they also want to gain experience for the future.
The working.com poll asked students to evaluate a number of issues related to summer jobs and working in general. The results showed:
58% of students felt that the finding a summer job has been harder this year and 60% blamed it on the fact that there seems to be fewer jobs available.
65% of students expected to make between $10 and $14 an hour this summer and 93% said they will have to find some sort of part time work during the school year.
49% have borrowed over $12,000 to pay for school.
Ontario students felt the recent strike had an effect on their job search with 69% saying that they had less time to look for a job this year because of the extra class time required to finish the curriculum.
One advantage indicated by the data is that employers hiring students this summer may also successfully retain them part-time for the remainder of the year because more students expect to work throughout the school year. This may save some recruitment time and effort to interview with that in mind, said Peters.
working.com recently launched a summer jobs section on the site that offered employers the opportunity to post summer jobs for free. The site currently has over about 200 summer jobs listed across the country (updated throughout the day)and can be accessed via www.working.com/Summer Jobs.
