Edmonton Journal Earns Recognition as One of North Americas Top Newspapers
|
 |
Edmonton, AB November 25, 2005 The Edmonton Journal is pleased to announce that it has been acknowledged by the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors as one of North Americas Top 10 newspapers for feature sections.
The honour, bestowed on the paper at the Associations annual conference last month, recognized the Journal for its fearlessness and innovation and commended its willingness to challenge readers in ways many traditional newspapers would not dare.
The papers sections Bistro, At Home, Culture, Whats On and Ed Magazine were entered in the competition against 90 other North American newspapers from tiny dailies to large market newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post, and was the only Canadian newspaper to receive the honour.
The contest was judged in part by average American newspaper readers, who, according to Michael Smith, a contest judge and Managing Director of Northwestern Universitys Media Management Centre, fell in love with Edmonton by reading the Journal. Other judges remarked that the Journals feature sections are what Edmontons all about traditional, off-beat, hip and worldy.
This recognition confirms that we have one of the most innovative, talented and dynamic group of editors in the country, said Journal Publisher Linda Hughes. Receiving this honour is not only an acknowledgement of the great writing and design that we strive for everyday in our Culture and features sections, but also a testament to the dynamic community in which we live, she said.
