Global Television wins at 2006 Promax & BDA Awards in New York

(New York and Toronto) Global Television has picked up a number of on-air and broadcast design accolades at the 2006 Promax & BDA Awards in New York, including a notable international bronze win for Global National, two North American silvers for Global Calgary, a North American silver for Global Edmonton and a North American bronze win for the network’s primetime program, Falcon Beach.

Global National competed against international television broadcasters to win bronze in the 2006 BDA World Gold Award in the category of Best News Open (out-of-house) for its opening title sequence. The opening was designed by Elaine Cantwell of Los Angeles-based Spark Creative in a joint initiative with Global National as part of the recent Global Television Network’s rebrand strategy.

The Global National opening sequence features a dynamic “fly-over-the-earth” animation with a high-tech theme that creates the effect of scanning and searching for national and international news.

Global Calgary won two silvers in the 2006 PROMAX North America Awards in the Broadcast TV Station: Special Projects and Radio Promotion categories for the in-house production of the “2005 CanSpell” campaign and their “I Do It” radio promotion spot, respectively.

The “CanSpell” campaign promoted the 2005 CanWest CanSpell National Spelling Bee by using a series of fun, energetic and colourful elements filled with imagery to grab attention and create awareness for the competition.

The “I Do It” promo was a unique radio spot that promoted the news to a youth audience, delivering a subtle yet poignant message to this media savvy demographic by asking the question, “When do you do it…watch Global News, that is?”

Global Edmonton also won a silver in the same awards in the Broadcast TV Station: On-Air Sales category for “BBQ Boot Camp”, a 30-second sales promotion spot for Tony Roma’s Famous for Ribs that sent 10 local dads for barbeque lessons at the restaurant.

“The marketing and creative teams at Global National and Global News affiliates are truly some of the best talent in the industry,” says Steve Wyatt, senior vice-president of news and information for Global Television Network. “The fact that we won these awards amongst hundreds of international broadcast organizations is a great honour for Global.”

Global Television’s Falcon Beach won a bronze award in the 2006 BDA North America Awards in the Total Package Design: Topical All-Inclusive Combination category for the show’s multiplatform national marketing campaign. The campaign included a variety of customized ads in major daily and commuter newspapers, theatres, transit, health clubs, university/college campuses, as well as a unique guerilla marketing initiative. Falcon Beach is an original Canadian primetime drama series filmed on the shores of Lake Winnipeg and airs on Global.

“Global’s marketing team developed a compelling marketing campaign for Falcon Beach and we are very proud of the creative team for bringing those marketing concepts to life,” says David Hamilton, vice-president of marketing for Global Television Network. “To receive this marketing and design accolade from our industry peers is a great reward for all the hard work the marketing group has invested over the last year.”
