NATIONAL POST MONDAY-FRIDAY READERSHIP UP 7%

Toronto Star, Globe and Mail and Toronto Sun readership declines
(TORONTO – Friday, September, 16, 2005) According to independent figures released yesterday by Newspaper Audience Databank Inc. (NADbank), the National Post's Monday-Friday readership in Toronto has increased by 7% compared to the same period last year. The Post’s key competitors, however, including specifically the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail and the Toronto Sun, all saw their Monday-Friday readership numbers fall during the same period (-9%, -5%, and -16% respectively).

Of significant interest is the jump in the exclusive readership of the National Post; 74% of National Post weekday readers do not read the Globe and Mail, up significantly from 64% in 2004.

Online readership of the National Post also increased by 7% versus 2004, but again declined for The Toronto Star, Globe and Mail and The Toronto Sun (-16%, -16% and -14% respectively).

“I’m very pleased with our growth in overall readership, both in print and online, particularly at a time when our paid competitors are experiencing negative growth,” said Gordon Fisher, Publisher, National Post. “And I think our impressive 10 point increase in exclusive readership is a strong indication of our growing influence in the Toronto market."

Time spent reading, a key figure for advertisers, increased for the National Post from 33 minutes a year ago to 36 minutes this year. "I'm really heartened by that," said Mr. Fisher. "Post readers are spending more time with the paper, and that’s important to note."

Additionally, the National Post also saw a 63% jump amongst readers with household incomes of $50,000-$75,000, a 27% jump in the 18-34 year old demographic and 15% increase with adults aged 50+. University grads and male readers also grew by 7 and 11% respectively.
