(VANCOUVER) Heading into the Fall 2006 Season, the countrys most-watched national newscast greets another milestone as it celebrates its fifth anniversary. Since its launch on September 3, 2001, Global National has distinguished itself as a critically-acclaimed, award-winning newscast that has been embraced by viewers coast-to-coast.
Following the move to a consistent 5:30 p.m. timeslot across Canada (6:30 in the Maritimes) on February 6th, 2006, Global National quickly became the nations most-watched national newscast, drawing an average of 897,200 viewers across Canada, as compared to CTV Nationals 829,900 and CBC National with 689,700. (*February 6-August 27, 2006: BBM Canada, A2+ total Canada, Monday to Friday.)
We are thrilled that in five short years Canadian viewers have chosen Global National as their national newscast of record, says Steve Wyatt, senior vice-president of news and information for Global Television. This is a true testament to the hard work of the best news team in Canada.
On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to thank our viewers for helping us grow, added Kevin Newman, Global Nationals anchor and executive editor. This is a fierce, competitive business so we appreciate their support and will continue to work hard to deliver quality, credible news coverage.
Throughout the month of September, Global National introduces a series of unique news specials that address key issues concerning Canadians: What is the Canadian government doing to support our Canadian troops in this war-torn age? Why is depression one of the most common illnesses in Canada? Can we find evidence of bird flu up North and stop it from making its way to the rest of Canada?
Global National Feature Reports Include:
• Pursuit of Happiness: a five-part special that looks at why Canadians are depressed during a time when Canadians seem to have more than ever. Experts on the topic look at the sociological, biological and economic determinants of happiness. Began September 4th.
• State of Our Military: a three-part special that examines a number of issues regarding our Canadian military, including the condition of our soldiers and a reality check on military recruitment. Begins September 5th.
• Bird Flu Hunters: Health specialist Jennifer Tryons exclusive investigative stories as she goes for the hunt to find out what the risks are for a North American bird flu outbreak. Begins September 13th.
