Global News BC and CHBC-TV Kelowna Recognized at 2006 Jack Webster Awards

Mike McCardell Chosen Best Commentator of the Year

Deborra Hope Awarded Best Feature Story

CHBC-TV Kelowna Wins Best News Reporting of the Year
(Vancouver) Global News BC and CHBC-TV Kelowna have won three major accolades at the 2006 Jack Webster Awards. Mike McCardell was recognized with Best Commentator of the Year, Deborra Hope was awarded Best Feature Story for her “Courage to Come Back” special series, while Kent Molgat and Blaine Gaffney of CHBC won Best News Reporting of the Year for “Corruption at City Hall.” The gala event was held last night at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“We are extremely proud of our teams’ achievements and their outstanding work,” says Steve Wyatt, Senior Vice-President of News and Information for CanWest MediaWorks. “It is a great honour to be recognized amongst our industry peers, especially in the name of such a legendary journalist as Jack Webster.”

One of Global News BC’s most beloved personalities, McCardell is best known for his unique and quirky stories of the city’s most intriguing characters. He talks to anyone he comes across around the Lower Mainland and often finds amazing life stories from perfect strangers. Like the homeless man from South America who was given a job by a coffee shop manager from Morocco, or the champion lawn bowler from Fiji who was practicing during a rainy day. These are the kind of stories viewers have come to enjoy from McCardell.

McCardell started his journalism career at the New York Daily News before joining the Vancouver Sun in 1973 covering crime and then moved over to Global BC (then BCTV) in 1976.

Global BC’s Early News anchor Deborra Hope has been a long-time supporter of the “Courage to Come Back” awards that honours six individuals who have overcome adversities in their lives. This year, she profiled all six award recipients and their extraordinary stories on the News Hour broadcast.

Originally from Trail, B.C., Hope began her broadcast journalism career at the University of British Columbia’s campus radio station before moving to the Canadian arm of United Press, then the Canadian Press and then joining BCTV in 1981.

The Okanagan’s very own CHBC news veterans Kent Molgat and Blaine Gaffney have been with the station for more than sixteen years. Their “Corruption at City Hall” multiple award-winning investigative story examined the financial activities of Vernon’s municipal government, including the city’s former Mayor, resulting in his resignation.

The Jack Webster Foundation was established in 1986 to recognize excellence in British Columbia journalism in honour of the late broadcaster who was Western Canada's best known and most influential reporter.
