A Global and CH CAB Awards Update

Global News Calgary and CH Red Deer Honoured with 2006 Gold Ribbon Awards

Alberta Shines with 'Best News Special Series', 'Best Community Service' and 'Best Magazine Programming' Wins
(Vancouver)Global News Calgary and CH Red Deer were Gold Ribbon Award winners at the 2006 Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) Convention. The awards were presented yesterday at the CAB 80 th Anniversary celebration in Vancouver.

Global News Calgary won Best News Special Series for “Bully Solution” and Best Community Service (television-medium market) for “Shell’s Spirit of the Future Awards.”

“Bully Solution”, a three-part news special hosted by Jill Croteau examined the serious problem of bullying in schools and an innovative approach taken by a local high school to curb the widespread problem. Croteau and the news team followed the emotional struggles of a young victim of bullying, and documented the school-wide program that confronted bullies with the impact of their actions. The program resulted in an outpouring of regret from students, and the series provoked changes at a number of Alberta schools and in many young lives.

“Shell’s Spirit of the Future Awards”, a province-wide partnership between Shell Canada and Global Television, went in search of Alberta’s top young volunteers. The competition drew more than 600 applications from qualified and inspirational volunteers of which 30 winners were chosen. Winners received a $5000 Shell scholarship toward their post-secondary education and their non-profit organization also received a matching donation.

CH Red Deer won Best Magazine Programming for “Stampede Central,” a thirty-minute magazine program on the thrills and spills of this year’s Calgary Stampede. The show provided viewers with highlights, results, player profiles, previews and behind-the-scenes coverage of one of the nation’s greatest outdoor show.

The CAB is the national voice of Canada's private broadcasters, representing the vast majority of Canadian programming services, including private radio and television stations, networks, specialty, pay and pay-per-view services. The Gold Ribbon Awards pay tribute to achievements in Canadian broadcasting in recognition of outstanding productions in categories including community service, breaking news, humour, public affairs and promotion of Canadian talent.
