canada.com Launches New Shopping Tool For Canadians

Research tool provides information and deals from local retailers
TORONTO – Monday, October 3, 2005 – Canadians today are global leaders in their use of the Internet in almost every way except one – purchasing physical goods. Where online Canadian consumers do excel though, is in their use of the Internet is to research goods and services that they subsequently purchase in other channels – primarily through traditional bricks & mortar retailers. While search engines do a good job of providing links to major retailers, most don’t provide information on current promotions or links to local retailers.

To address this gap, canada.com is launching a new version of shopping, an online research tool that will make it easier for consumers to find local goods and services, and will provide them with information on current promotions or specials from retailers in their city or town.

The launch of shopping is being led by CanWest MediaWorks’ Michael LeBlanc, who joined the canada.com team from the Hudson’s Bay Company, where he was a Director of CRM and orchestrated the launch of Hbc.com, now one of Canada’s top online eCommerce destinations.

“One of the most powerful benefits that shopping delivers to consumers is the ability to go online and research goods and services available from businesses right in their very own community,” said Mr. Leblanc. “While many businesses have an online presence, their sites don’t always feature the most current weekly promotions that featured in our papers. Shopping allows consumers to add another dimension to their shopping research – it delivers information from right in their community that isn’t always available from conventional search engines or other existing online research techniques.”

shopping also offers smaller businesses who cannot afford to maintain a website or develop online e-flyers, a cost-effective way to showcase their products and businesses online and connect with internet-savvy Canadians.

“For businesses of any size, our new shopping product takes our advertisers’ marketing dollars and stretches their investment,” said Arturo Duran, President, CanWest Interactive and Business Ventures. “Not only do we take print ads and automatically put them online right in the community where they do business, but shopping enhances their advertising with powerful, state-of-the-art customer focused technology such as roll-over highlights, mapping, address information - even adding the ability for consumers to individual ads to friends and family via email. This is just one of the many enhancements canada.com will be rolling out over the upcoming months to provide increased value to consumers and to our advertisers.”
