working.com launches Employer of Choice Marketing Awards

Gala night will recognize outstanding efforts in employment branding in Canada
(Toronto) December 14, 2006 – CanWest MediaWorks Inc is pleased to announce the launch of the working.com Employer of Choice Marketing Awards that will showcase the very best in employment branding across Canada. As the only awards show of its kind in Canada, it will recognize exceptional recruitment advertising creative developed to attract and retain potential and current employees and connect with the general public. The launch marks the official call for submissions through the awards website at www.ecmarketingawards.com.

“In this competitive age of corporate recruitment, a compelling employment brand is one of the most powerful tools an organization can leverage in order to gain a competitive edge,” said Susan Hayes, General Manager, working.com, Canada’s national career network with a distinctly local focus. “ Canada’s top employers are quickly recognizing that differentiating their organizations as employers of choice helps secure the talent they seek. It’s time to recognize and promote the most exceptional examples in this creative arena.”

Employment branding has become a key spoke in recruitment strategies for a growing number of organizations, as a looming Canadian labour shortage has already sparked a war for talent that is pitting employer against employer.

Dr. Linda Duxbury of the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University indicates that, based on Canadian labour force statistics, although the workforce has grown by approximately 226,000 people a year for the last 25 years and will grow by another 123,000 a year this decade, the labour pool will take a sharp turn as the baby-boom generation begins to retire. By 2010, the workforce is expected to increase by only 42,000 per year and by 2016, annual growth is expected to hover near zero. Within the next decade, there will be less than one person to take the place of every two retirees.

To prepare for this labour shortage, organizations are adopting employment branding strategies at an ever increasing rate, seeking creative solutions that capture the essence of their organization, generate a strong first impression, and help them attract, hire and retain the right employees.
