CanWest News Service Expands to Become Canada’s Leading News Organization

Investment in journalism delivers high calibre content over multiple platforms in real time
(Ottawa) – CanWest Publications Inc today announced a major investment in editorial content with plans to expand the CanWest News Service (CNS). Canada’s leading news organization will be headquartered in Ottawa and will draw on the exceptional work of more than 1,500 talented CanWest print and broadcast journalists in 15 cities across Canada and around the world. Today’s announcement underscores CanWest’s commitment to quality journalism delivered when and where today’s readers want it – online, in print or on television.

“Growing CanWest News Service is an investment in Canadian journalism,” said Dennis Skulsky, President of CanWest Publications Inc. “With a robust base of talented journalists and a strong presence not only in Canada but around the world, we cover the news that matters to Canadians. We are committed to delivering the news to our readers on whatever platform works best for them.”

The expansion plan includes the hiring of more than 25 journalists to be based in Ottawa and is in addition to the investment CanWest makes annually with the hiring of dozens of interns in its news operations across Canada. The expanded operation in Ottawa will be the country’s most integrated newsroom, with journalists working together to create content for CanWest websites and newspapers.

Delivering stories that matter to Canadians also means the opening of news bureaus in Canada and abroad. Quebec City and Halifax bureaus will open in the months ahead and, later this year, foreign bureaus will open in Shanghai, China and Paris, France. Those foreign bureaus will be staffed by veteran CanWest journalists, ensuring stories from around the globe reflect the Canadian perspective. At a time when many news organizations are reducing overseas coverage, by year’s end, CanWest’s foreign bureaus will include Washington, New York, Jerusalem, Paris and Shanghai.

“This investment in editorial aims to serve the needs of our readers at a time when understanding Canada’s place and influence in the world is vital,” said Gerry Nott, Editor-in-chief of CNS.
