Global Calgary Honoured As Inaugural Recipient Of The ‘Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award’ By The Radio-Television News Director's Association Of Canada

Former Governor General On Hand To Introduce All-New Award Category
(Vancouver) Global News Calgary was recognised this evening as the first-ever recipient of the Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA), in recognition of their week-long News Series "Racism at The Door". The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, and former Governor General, introduced and presented the namesake honour at the RTNDA President’s Dinner in Vancouver.

Accepted on behalf of Global Calgary by News Director Dave Budge, the 'Diversity Award' recognizes stories, features or series that best exemplify or explore an issue of diversity in a Canadian news program.

The winning series, “Racism at the Door” examined the issue of racial profiling at Calgary nightclubs.

Reporter Jill Croteau’s hidden-camera investigation launched a week of feature reports, including a special first-person “day-in-the-life” narrative from a local anti-racism activist Derrick Shirley on what it is like to be black living in Calgary. The series culminated with a public forum held at the Global Calgary studios to discuss the problem and possible solutions.

This award was announced separately from the RTNDA National Awards, which will be presented at a gala event on Saturday, June 23 in Vancouver.

RTNDA Canada represents the nation’s radio and television newsrooms and new media operations. The RTNDA is dedicated to fostering excellence in electronic journalism and honours the very best in Canadian Radio, Television and New Media journalism each year with the prestigious Regional and National RTNDA Awards Program.
