Global News And CH News Win National Radio-Television News Directors Awards

Global BC Chosen As Canada’s Best Newscast

Global Winnipeg Wins Best Long Feature And CHBC Kelowna Picks Up Award For Best Short Feature
(Vancouver) CanWest MediaWorks is pleased to announce that Global and CH News have won several national 2007 Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA) Awards, including a major victory by Global BC with judges choosing them as Canada’s Best Newscast.
 
The national awards received by Global and CH News are as follows:
 
Global BC (large market)
  • Bert Cannings Award - Best Newscast for the November 15 th ‘News Hour’ broadcast and ongoing coverage of last winter’s West Coast storm. Viewers from all over B.C. tuned in to the ‘News Hour’ to watch the damage caused by 100 km winds that pounded the coast. The stories told of evacuations, power outages, collapsed structures and flood threats.

  • Charlie Edwards Award - Best Spot News for “Queen of the North Sinks,” breaking coverage of the BC Ferry sinking in March 2006 when the Global BC news team mobilized a team of seven reporters to cover the amazing tale of survival, heroism and mystery.

  • Lifetime Achievement Award - Global BC long-time camera operator Gary Hanney also received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding accomplishments and excellence throughout his 40-year career. He has covered many of B.C.’s biggest stories including Clifford Olson, the Johnson-Bentley murders, escapes from Ken Prison, a major plane crash at Vancouver airport, and every provincial and national election race.

Global Winnipeg (large market)
  • Dave Rogers Award - Best Long Feature for “Saving Grace: The Harry Lehotsky Story,” a half-hour documentary chronicling the life and sudden death of a beloved reverend and community leader in Winnipeg. Reverend Lehotsky was diagnosed with non-operative terminal cancer and died after a difficult six month struggle.

CHBC Kelowna (medium market)
  • Dave Rogers Award - Best Short Feature for “From the Okanagan to Ethiopia,” part of a series documenting the challenges facing a group of Okanagan medical volunteers who traveled to Ethiopia and the enormous difference they made in people’s lives. CHBC cameraman Colin Macdonald accompanied the group to tell the stories of the hardships people in Ethiopia faced through the eyes of the volunteers.

In addition, Global Calgary was the first ever recipient of the Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award in recognition of their week-long news series "Racism at The Door," which examined the issue of racial profiling at Calgary nightclubs. The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson presented the award at the President’s Gala last night, which recognizes stories, features or series that best exemplify or explore an issue of diversity in a Canadian news program.
 
RTNDA Canada represents the nation’s radio and television newsrooms and new media operations. The RTNDA is dedicated to fostering excellence in electronic journalism and honours the very best in Canadian Radio, Television and New Media journalism each year with the prestigious Regional and National RTNDA Awards Program.
