National Post celebrates seven years

Paper continues to gain new readers and advertisers
TORONTO, Oct. 27, 2005/ - The National Post is celebrating its seventh
anniversary today with a special feature commemorating the best of the Post
covers since the paper's beginning.

"When I look back over the past seven years, I am extremely pleased with
the direction of the paper and with the significant ground we've gained," said
Gordon Fisher, Publisher of the National Post. "We continue to grow our highly
desirable readership base - in fact, out of our key competitors, we were the
only paper to see readership growth this past quarter in Toronto. We also
continue to shrink our operating losses, while at the same time are enhancing
the paper with new features and content."

In 2001, when CanWest assumed control of the newspaper, losses amounted
to a staggering $64 million. Today, losses have been reduced by more than
two thirds of that number as the newspaper continues to place a strong focus
on revenue growth, operational efficiencies and ongoing product enhancements.

In an earlier memo to employees, Mr. Fisher highlighted several other
notable achievements, including:

- The successful launch of new sections, Driving and Working. Partnering
with CanWest MediaWork's online sites, driving.ca and working.ca, the
new sections have resonated strongly with both consumers and
advertisers.

- Increased focus on strategic marketing and advertising. Some of the
company's best advertising minds have been working with Post and
together with CanWest MediaWork's Marketing Ventures Group, have
developed a number of new and innovative programs for our advertising
customers.

- An increase in circulation numbers, with key gains in both home
delivery and single copy sales.

"At the end of the day, the most important thing to note is that our
editorial team at the Post continues to produce a newspaper of high quality
and enterprising journalism," said Mr. Fisher. "Our sales teams tell us that
the vibrancy and personality of the Post is a constant in the success that we
have with major clients and prospective readers - that is one thing that
hasn't changed in past seven years and will remain a constant as we move
forward."
