Accolade Complements Global News Ontarios Two RTNDA |
 |
(Toronto April 7, 2006) Peter Kent, Global Television News deputy editor, has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2006 Presidents Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA).
This accolade comes at the same time as two RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Awards that the Global News Ontario team picked up in the categories of Investigative Reporting and Spot News in the International Region.
The Presidents Award is presented annually to honour individuals, stations, companies or groups who have brought distinction to, or have made major contributions to the broadcast news industry.
"I am truly delighted and humbled to accept this honour from my peers in broadcast journalism, says Peter Kent. The RTNDA awards are some of the most cherished and highly respected awards by journalists in our industry.
Kent began his journalism career in the 1960s when he worked in talk radio in Vancouver before moving to television as a foreign correspondent for CBC, CTV and NBC. He has reported on major world events including the evacuation of Saigon and the fall of the Berlin Wall and has been on assignments that took him to Uganda, Cambodia and Vietnam.
He also anchored CBCs The National and was a founding producer and co-host of The Journal on CBC between reporting stints in the U.S. and abroad with NBC News and Monitor TV News.
He joined Global Television in 1992 and became the driving force in creating the networks initial early evening national newscast, First National.
Kent is a member of Canadas Broadcast Hall of Fame, former director of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, four-time Emmy nominee and the recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award.
Peters hard work and exceptional achievements have earned him the respect of everyone in the industry, says Steve Wyatt, senior vice president of news and information for Global Television. His distinguished career in journalism is simply unmatched and we are extremely proud to have him as part of our Global family.
The Presidents Award will be presented at the RTNDA National Convention on June 10th in St. Johns Newfoundland.
