Global News and CH News wins eight 2005 RTNDA National and Network Awards

|
(St. John's, Newfoundland) Global News and CH News have won eight 2005 Radio-Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA) National and Network Awards this evening at a gala in St. John's, Newfoundland.
In addition, Global Television deputy editor Peter Kent was awarded the prestigious Presidents Award for his amazing journalism career.
The national and network awards that Global News and CH News received were as follows:
Global National
• Dave Rogers Awards for Best Long Feature for "Queens of Diamonds," Kevin Newman's documentary about the intriguing adventures of two young women entrepreneurs who founded Stornoway Diamonds, one of the largest diamond mines in the world located in Nunavut.
• Gord Sinclair Award for Best Special Events for "Mayerthorpe Funeral," a stirring tribute to the four fallen members of the Mayerthorpe RCMP.
Global Ontario
• Dave Rogers Award for Best Long Feature for "Miracle on Ice," a two-part story about an exemplary young boy with a stutter but when he plays hockey, the stutter miraculously disappears.
• Ron Laidlaw Award for Best Continuing Coverage for "Alicia Ross," a powerful story about the random murder of a young Markham woman and what her family had to go through to cope with the grief.
Global Edmonton
• Dave Rogers Award for Best Short Feature (large market) for "Eso Conductor," a behind-the-scenes story of the flamboyant new conductor from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
Global BC
• Sam Ross Award for Best Editorial/Commentary for "Dragged Kid was Brave," Mike McCardell 's eloquent commentary about a young gas attendant who was dragged and killed by a drunken gas thief.
• Honourable mention: Ron Laidlaw Award for Best Continuing Coverage for "Tsunami," Rumina Daya's stories on the South Asian Tsunami recovery.
CHBC TV Kelowna
• Dan McArthur Award for Best In-depth/Investigative reporting for "Corruption at City Hall," an unprecedented examination into the financial activities of Vernon's municipal government, including the city's Mayor.
