CanWest MediaWorks Publications Inc. Announces Retirement of Edmonton Journal Publisher

(EDMONTON) – Dennis Skulsky, President of CanWest MediaWorks Publications Inc., today announced that Linda Hughes, Publisher of the Edmonton Journal, will be retiring effective January 1, 2007.

Ms. Hughes’ remarkable career, spanning 30 years, was capped on January 1, 1992, when she was appointed Publisher of the Edmonton Journal, the first woman named to lead a major Canadian daily newspaper. Her many community and professional accomplishments have been recognized with several awards and honorary degrees, including an honorary Doctor of Law from the University of Alberta.

“Linda is highly respected as a business leader, and leaves a wonderful legacy at the Journal and in our industry as someone who stood for all of the right values,” said Dennis Skulsky, President of CanWest MediaWorks Publications Inc. “I have had the privilege of working with Linda for many years, and learned much from her as she served her community and the newspaper with professionalism and a highly-developed sense of ethics.”

A graduate of the University of Victoria, Linda began her newspaper career as a reporter with the Victoria Daily News, prior to joining the Edmonton Journal, where she quickly made a name for herself as an award-winning reporter. She went on to head the legislative bureau, serve on the editorial board, and hold both the city editor and managing editor posts before being named Editor-In-Chief in 1987.

“I have very mixed emotions. It’s been an incredible privilege to work at The Journal as publisher for so many years and I’ll miss the people and the business very much. But I feel the time has come for a change and I’m looking forward to this new phase in my life,” said Ms. Hughes.

As a leading publisher for Southam, Hollinger and CanWest, Ms. Hughes became actively involved in a number of different community organizations in Edmonton. Her high profile community activities included serving as chair of the board of United Way.
She is currently chair of the NorQuest College Foundation Board, and is a member of the Centre for Constitution Studies and the Strategy Council for the Mazankowski
Heart Institute. She is also a member of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research council.

The search for Ms. Hughes’ successor will begin immediately.
