Years from now, 2006-07 television season will be earmarked as a pivotal year for Global National. No longer was it the newcomer nipping at the competition's heels. Led by Anchor and Executive Editor Kevin Newman, Global National has raised the bar to become Canadas most-watched national newscast, reaching more Canadians than any other national newscast.
Launched on September 3, 2001, only days before 9/11, Global National offers Canadians an earlier alternative for national and international news. The newscast works closely with local Global newsrooms, as well as CanWests print and international partners, providing access to news-gathering resources across the country and around the world.
Throughout the year, the Global National team traveled far and wide, reporting on breaking stories and major events, delivering a distinctly Canadian perspective to viewers. Kevin Newman and his team took the newscast on the road, broadcasting live from: Afghanistan to spend Thanksgiving with our Canadian military; Montreal for the Liberal Leadership Convention and Dawson College shooting; Ottawa for the 100th Anniversary of Scouts Canada and the induction of Stephen Harpers new Conservative Government; and Fort McMurray and Calgary for a special series on the environment, and oil and energy sector.
In addition to heralding the program's defining fifth season, 2006-07 saw Kevin Newman honoured with a second Gemini win for "Best News Anchor" as he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a journalist. From his recent reports on the ground with our Canadian military in Afghanistan, to exclusive one-on-ones with the nation's top decision-makers, and regular features including "Everyday Heroes", Newman and the team strengthen Global Nationals positioning statement of News Understood - connecting with audiences coast-to-coast, bringing clarity to the issues and events of the day.
